Sunset
Sherbet
The Bay
Had Sherb.
A visual and genetic study of Sunset Sherbet and its place in California’s dessert-era family tree.
The
Cultivar
Sunset Sherbet sits at an important intersection in modern California genetics: Thin Mint GSC × Pink Panties.
The cultivar belongs to the period when the Bay Area’s Cookies family of genetics was beginning to reshape what California flower looked, smelled and tasted like.
Sherbet would become important not only as a cultivar in its own right, but as part of the genetic foundation associated with the Gelato family that followed.
the Bay had Sherb.
The Bay Had Sherb
Two branches of California genetics converge in Sunset Sherbet. Thin Mint GSC provides the Cookies side of the pairing, while Pink Panties forms the other parental branch.
Sherbet’s larger historical significance comes from what followed. Sunset Sherbet was subsequently used with Thin Mint GSC in the genetic story associated with the original Gelato population.
That places Sherbet directly between two defining chapters: the rise of GSC and the explosion of Gelato genetics throughout California and beyond.
